British government has added 11 more countries to its public alert roster concerning the dangers of methanol toxicity from tainted spirits.

This revised travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of reported cases" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Just recently, authorities had previously added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, after several serious cases including the deadly loss of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being warned that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can cause blindness or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Exactly what is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Methanol is a toxic substance commonly utilized in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This substance is not intended for drinking.

While it is naturally produced during the production of beverages, commercial firms lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the distillation process.

Yet in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to reduce expenses, and as it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to notice.

Official Guidance for Travellers

Foreign Office official the minister stated that all travellers should recognize the signs of industrial alcohol contamination.

"If you're drinking spirits overseas, stick to well-known venues and steer clear of local brews or complimentary drinks," the official warned.

"If something feels off, such as a hangover that's far more intense than normal or vision problems – seek medical attention fast."

The entire list of destinations listed as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
