Waymo's Autonomous Taxis Coming Soon London Streets Next Year.

American enterprise Waymo has revealed that its self-driving vehicles will be on offer for use on London's streets beginning next year.

London Becomes Pioneering European City for Autonomous Taxi Service.

London will emerge as the inaugural European city to launch an autonomous taxi service, akin to those currently in use in multiple US cities and four other American urban centers utilizing Waymo's innovative technology.

Preliminary Testing Phase to Begin with Trained Operators.

Waymo announced that its vehicles are currently traveling to London and will commence driving on the capital's streets in the coming weeks with safety drivers behind the wheel.

The company – originally created as a spin-off from Google's autonomous vehicle program and belonging to the same parent group – explained it would increase operations and collaborate with the government transport body and Transport for London to secure the required permissions to offer fully autonomous services by 2026.

Growing Involvement in Autonomous Transport In London.

Further organizations, including Uber and the British technology firm Wayve, have likewise declared their own plans to test autonomous cabs in the city next year.

This is in response to the British government confirming it would fast-track regulations enabling real-world tests to occur before laws allowing self-driving vehicles is enacted in full.

“I'm delighted that Waymo intends to introduce their offerings to London next year, under our suggested testing initiative,” said the official, Heidi Alexander.

“Supporting the autonomous vehicle industry will increase inclusive travel alternatives while also bringing employment, funding, and opportunities to the UK. Cutting-edge investment like this will assist in achieving our goal to be international frontrunners in emerging tech and drive national renewal.”

Complete Launch Projected After Automated Vehicles Act Is Enforced.

A broader introduction of autonomous taxis is expected in the UK after the new law comes completely into force in the latter part of 2027.

Waymo's Existing Ties in the United Kingdom and Beyond.

Waymo already has connections to the UK after opening its first European research base in Oxford in 2019.

It is furthermore starting operations in Tokyo using JLR eco-friendly cars, marking its only other current operation beyond the US.

“Evidence confirms how to responsibly scale completely driverless ride-hailing, and we look forward to expand the benefits of our systems to the UK,” stated Tekedra Mawakana, noting that the innovation was “making roads safer and mobility more available”.

Established Experience in the US.

Waymo began its driverless taxis in 2020 and now states it has served over ten million riders in the United States.

In spite of some troubling events, Waymo asserted that statistics revealed that vehicles controlled by humans were involved in accidents that harmed people on foot at a much higher rate than its driverless fleet.
